"I like to talk with individuals at a school to get the insider perspective...Being able to chat with teachers or people who worked there in the past makes it easier to make an informed decision.“ David de Cespedes, Teachers for NYC Charter Schools alumni

The Written Application

Our written application consists of seven pages and is designed to help our program staff determine your program eligibility and alignment with essential traits that partner schools prioritize in high quality candidates. We recommend that you set aside 1-2 hours to complete your application and thoroughly proofread each section before submitting.

Throughout your application, program staff are looking for evidence of the following essential traits: professionalism, critical thinking, high expectations, and application of feedback. These are traits that our partner schools have identified as essential traits of highly effective teacher candidates.

1. Eligibility

In order to be eligible for our program, you must meet the following requirements:

Have your bachelor’s degree conferred by July 2019.

Be able to live in the NYC area by August 1, 2019.

Be currently authorized to work in the US.

2. Education

We ask you to list degree information to all degrees you currently have and/or are working toward. Please list all degrees and all majors. This helps us determine what subject areas you may be a good fit to teach.

3. Certification

While you do not need to have a current NY teaching certificate to apply to our program, we ask that you provide us with information on any teaching certifications you hold, training programs you have completed, and detail any formal teaching experience you have. Our partner schools are looking for teaching candidates with a variety of classroom experiences. If you are not certified, please research the New York certification process and requirements via our resources page so you are able to speak to hiring managers about any interest you have in becoming certified and the steps you are taking to get there.

4. Preferences

You will be asked to select all subject areas and grade levels you would be interested in teaching. Please note that preferring a subject area does not guarantee that you will be hired in that subject area. State and school requirements, as well as school needs, will all have an impact on the subject area in which you are offered a position. We also ask you to list all languages other than English that you are fluent in to determine your eligibility to teach bilingual education.

We are actively seeking educators excited about preparing students for careers of the future, and are looking for candidates in a wide variety of subject areas. A large proportion of available positions at partner schools are in STEM (specifically middle and high school math and science) and Special Education.

5. Resume

A successful resume is a great way for you to clearly outline your academic and/or professional history, highlight previous achievements, and demonstrate commitment to your community. Please be specific, including dates of employment and volunteer work, descriptions of your responsibilities, and an account of your accomplishments. Your resume should be no more than 1-2 pages long. Your resume can be uploaded as a Word or PDF document. Before uploading your resume, we recommend that you review these tips for crafting an effective teaching resume, as well as view the sample resume linked within that document. Make sure you proofread your resume for formatting, spelling, grammar, and clarity before submitting! If you are invited to join our candidate pool, your resume is one of the first things hiring managers at our partner schools will see when determining whether or not to offer you an interview at their school.

6. Application Short Answer Questions

In our four short answer questions, we ask you to detail why you are interested in teaching in NYC charter schools and how your previous experiences have prepared you to become an effective teacher in our partner schools. Even if you are not a highly experienced and/or certified teacher, we want to see how you view the role of the teacher in driving student achievement and evidence of your ability to work through challenges and solve problems.

We also screen for critical thinking and professionalism, so make sure to proofread your responses and resume to ensure they are high quality and professional! We recommend that you write out your answers in a word processor, save them, and then copy and paste the responses into the online application.

7. Survey

There is a short survey at the end of the application that asks where you first heard of the program and what motivated you to apply. The information provided in this section will have no impact on your candidacy and will not be considered as part of your application. Your responses here will help us find more people like you who might be interested in applying to Teachers for NYC Charter Schools!
